LIVE STOKED, LEAD STOKED

38. Finding Balance: Health, Career, and Personal Growth with Matthew Spence

The first time I joined Sarah Bettman for her podcast was in October 2024, for an engaging conversation about balance, personal growth, and pursuing one's passions. We talked about a model for employee engagement, discussed the thrill of participating in the 29029 Everesting Challenge, and explored how setting audacious goals can transform both business and life. The episode was filled with authentic stories, practical advice, and a reminder to live and lead "stoked."

50. Be a Doer, Not a Consumer with Matthew Spence

Sarah recently had me back on the podcast. A lot has changed over the last two years: I had completed three more 29029 Everesting challenges, published my first book, Lessons From the Wall: 15 Things I Learned About Leadership and Life By Doing Something Really Hard, delivered a TEDx talk, stepped further into entrepreneurship, and expanded my work as a speaker and leadership consultant.

But this conversation is about more than everything I had accomplished. We talk about what it takes to step away from the security of a corporate career, question the identities and expectations we carry with us, and figure out who you are when your job is no longer the thing defining you.

I also shared one of my favorite lessons from the book: “Be a Doer, Not Just a Consumer.” We dig into why I decided to stop relying on other people’s stories and start creating my own, and how that decision has shaped my work, leadership, and life.

We also talk about why living a life you’re stoked about matters to the way you lead, the power of bringing more of your humanity into your work, and what I’m learning as I step onto stages and tell my own stories instead of someone else’s.

THE CRYSTAL PETRY PODCAST

How Hardships Build Resilience & Leadership | Matthew Spence on Hiking, Loss & Perseverance

What if the hardest things you’ve been through weren’t setbacks—but teachers? In this powerful episode of the Crystal Petry Podcast, I sat down with host Crystal Petry for a meaningful conversation about hiking, profound loss, resilience, leadership, and the moments in life when quitting feels easier than continuing. I shared how challenging experiences can shape who we become—and how the journey itself can teach us lessons that success alone never could. This conversation explores what it really means to persevere, lead through adversity, and keep moving forward when the destination feels far away. In this episode, we explore how difficult experiences can become powerful teachers .
